Solving the Recruitment Puzzle in Construction

South Sulawesi is a province in Indonesia that is located in the eastern part of the country.

Like many other regions in eastern Indonesia, South Sulawesi has faced challenges in terms of economic development and poverty reduction.

Yet big changes are happening in this province with new infrastructure projects creating jobs and career opportunities.

But, the majority of these jobs are going to men, leaving women behind.

A recent study by The Australia-Indonesia Centre looked into why women aren’t participating in the transport construction sector and found that women do want to work in this field but face challenges such as a lack of interest in the industry and barriers to advancing their careers.

Despite cultural expectations that women stay at home with their families, more young women are going to college and pursuing careers in the transport and construction sector, including STEM fields like civil engineering.

The study provides insights into the opportunities and challenges in this industry for women.
